Group Fitness Instructor - (Dance) - Work Study

(Work Study)

This fitness instructor will specialize in teaching choreographed classes including: 

  • Zumba - Online (Any Date) or In-Person on March 23rd (Saturday) 8:00AM-5:30PM
  • Swerk - Online certification on April 7th (Sunday) 9:00AM-4:00PM

Must obtain certification (cost covered if hired) by set date.

Summer Start Date: April 22nd

Fall Start Date: August 19th

Getting Your Certification If Offered The Position

  • Campus Recreation will cover the cost of certification.
  • After being conditionally offered the position, you will have a set time limit to get a certification.
  • Once certified, you will be officially hired and can begin instructing.
  • Must attend American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certification course (offered by Campus Recreation)

Interview Timeframe - Week of April 1st 

If officially hired, you must attend:

  • In-person pre-hire form: 30 minutes
  • In-person on-boarding at Human Resources: 2 hours
  • In-person mandatory new hire meeting: 1 hour
  • In-person mandatory department new hire training: 2 hours
  • In-person mandatory area new hire training: 2 hours

Hiring requirements for all Campus Recreation positions

  • If a student of Texas A&M University-Commerce must be currently enrolled or pre-registered in classes holding at least part-time status of 6 hours for undergraduate and 3 hours for graduate.
  • Must pass State of Texas background check.

 

Job requirements for all Campus Recreation positions:

  • Student workers are only able to work up to 19 hours/per week while classes are in session. (Applies to all positions worked on-campus).
  • Attend mandatory meetings, training, and in-services.
  • Follow and enforce all Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote Campus Recreation programs.
  • Serve as an integral role in the Campus Recreation Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well with recreation team.
  • Ability to work well with participants and patron community.
  • Must be in good academic standing with the University.
  • Must be in good conduct standing with the University.

Position Description

Summary of Responsibilities:

Create change and build positive associations with physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits. Lead, design and implement group fitness routines that are safe and effective. Engage, educate and empower members on fitness and well-being.

Program Area: Fitness

Supervision: Assistant Director of Fitness & Wellbeing

Hourly pay rate with certification: $13.50/hour

Hours Per Week: Must work at least 3-4 fitness classes per week.

Level: Entry

Primary Duties:

  • Responsible for instructing and leading group fitness classes in a safe and engaging environment
  • Educate and maintain proper techniques for fitness participants
  • Promote knowledge of proper group fitness components, i.e.: warm-up, aerobic exercise, flexibility, cool down, etc
  • Create a welcoming environment
  • Support and motivate group fitness participants
  • Offer a variety of exercise modifications to accommodate all fitness levels
  • Monitor access to group fitness classes
  • Assist participants in swiping into class
  • Participate in Continuing Education Credits (CEC's or CEU's)
  • Attend the in-house onboarding classes, shadow shifts, and mentorship program
  • Attend staff in-service and meetings
  • Perform other duties assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Nationally recognized group fitness instructor certification or specialty group fitness certification. ACE, NCCA, Zumba, Yoga, NETA, SCW, or other Specialization
  • Condition of employment - must obtain certification to be officially and maintain it through employment.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs or more as required by job duties

Certifications:

  • Obtaining more fitness certifications will result in a higher hourly pay rate due to the nature of training and knowledge
  • Two certifications - $14.00
  • Three or more certifications - $14.50
